Challenges of Chinese-Filipino Christianity
Saturday, August 8, 2009

by : Julie Tan-Sy ('82)

In line with the MIC (Missionary Sisters of Immaculate Conception)’s centennial commemoration of its First Mission to China (1909), ICAAA sponsored Fr. Aristotle Dy, SJ’s talk, “Challenges of Chinese-Filipino Christianity.”  More than 80 parents, alumnae and friends attended the talk at the ICA multi-purpose hall last August 8, 2009.

Fr. Ari talked about the historical background and profile of the Chinese in the Philippines, of how the first generation immigrants from mainland China transformed to today’s third and fourth generation Chinese-Filipinos, who already consider the Philippines their home and China as just another country they visit during summer vacations.

Next, he discussed the integration of faith and culture. He described how “inculturation” or “gospel taking root in another culture,” is evident on important occasions. For instance, Baptism, one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church, and First Birthdays, which is an important calendar date for the Chinese, are celebrated together. The lighting of the “Double Happiness Unity Candle”, the “Three Bows” and fruit offerings and burning of incense, all uniquely Chinese rituals, are now done during Catholic weddings.  Even during funeral wakes, Catholic masses are celebrated alternately with Buddhist monks holding prayer vigils over the deceased by chanting verses of scripture. Some families celebrate both the 40th and 49th day Memorial Masses.

He concluded the talk by emphasizing that there is still much to be done in terms of evangelizing the culture, building bridges, resolving issues between Christianity and the Chinese culture and pursuing new ways to reach more people.

Fr. Ari left us with the following questions to reflect upon: What kind of identity are you forming in young children? How far have you gone in reflecting about the conflicts? What can you do to reach out and evangelize?
